Which Drug Testing Method is Best for Your Organization?

Many people need drug tests for different reasons. It can vary from pre-employment to a legal case involving drugs. Either way, you need to know which method would be best for your situation.

Urine is the most commonly used method. The detection window for a urine sample detects recent use of drugs, typically in the previous 24-72 hours depending on the frequency of use. Urine drug tests provide accurate results with a low cost.

Hair testing is commonly used to test for multiple uses over time. Head hair has a detection window of up to 3 months. Body hair has a detection window of up to 6 months. A hair test is more accurate than other methods. Also, as these are always observed collections, the chances of sample tampering by the donor is non-existent.

Nails can also be tested for drugs.  Fingernails are four times thicker than the typical strand of hair and often capture more of a substance than hair can. Fingernails have a detection window of 3-6 months, and toe nails can detect drug use of up to 12 months.

Oral fluids drug testing is not as accurate as the other methods because it will only capture drug use in the last 24-36 hours. Oral fluids testing can detect drugs in the saliva 30-60 minutes after ingestion, which is great for random, post-accident, or reasonable suspicion situations.
